She’s still a college student but this did not stop Dara Mae Tuazon from helping out young minds in the streets of Sampaloc, Manila, near the University of the East where she is studying Bachelor of Elementary Education.
It all started when she helped out three streetkids learn some basic lessons. Soon, her students grew to 35 and Bangketa Eskwela Foundation Inc. was born in 2017. Through her advocacy, Dara and her team of volunteers were able to educate not just these 35 students but over 100 out-of-school youth across Metro Manila.
Using her own money and resources, Dara taught these young minds how to read and write.
“Ang palaging tanong sa akin, “Bakit teacher ang kinuha mo? Wala naman pera sa pagtuturo.” I think, it’s not about the money. It’s about your passion and dedication in teaching. Sobra sobra pa sa pera o kung ano pa man materyal na bagay ang nakukuha ng isang guro sa pagtuturo ng mga bata. Sapat na sa amin na makita silang may natututunan hindi lang sa mga lessons sa school pati na rin sa buhay,” Dara posted on Facebook.
Many praised the young lady for her heart of gold, this led to Dara being nominated for the first-ever The One Philippines (TOP) Humanitarian Award – and she won!
Dara won a Php1.5-million grant to support her foundation from the TOP award body plus Php250,000 from individuals who believe in her advocacy.
So, what’s Dara going to do with the money?
She plans to give it all to the kids. Through her foundation, she plans to build a school for these street kids as well as buy teaching equipment and school supplies. Part of the money will also be used to support scholars and outreach programs.
What can you say about this one?
