A Filipina domestic worker has broken barriers with her sustainable fashion creations. Elpie Malicsi is working in Hong Kong as a maid but the Sustainable Sunday Couture exhibit warmly invited her to display her environment-friendly couture creations to be marveled at by on-lookers.

Through the use of plastic shopping bags and used coffee sachets, this Filipina domestic worker has reached unimaginable heights. No one would have thought that a maid was capable of something like this but Elpie’s creativity and passion proved us all wrong.

GMA News’ Nelson Canlas reported that the domestic worker constructed a number of sustainable, “multi-way” gowns. We want everyone to realize how impressive this is because the dresses that Elpie made can be worn in a number of ways. Imagine the difficulty of creating a ready-to-wear recycled outfit and then taking it a step further by allowing the dress to be worn any way we wanted.

Netizens were also amazed by Elpie’s talent and urged her to try creating more pieces with different materials.

“Nice Job, Elpie. Sana di lang sa recyclable materials ka mag excelGo for other materials to use in your designs. patunayan mo na di lang sa basura mahusay ang pinay.
“Tiyahin ko yan!! Marami pa syang kayang gawin. Sana masilip din ang galing nya sa fruit curving at baking.God Bless you tiya”

Elpie and her achievements gave new meaning to the word “trash” while championing the important cause of saving the planet.  It seems as though the items we discard and believe to be useless can be used to produce something beautiful. Let us hope that this would encourage more people to unleash their creativity while saving the environment at the same time.
