Kadamay members on Friday urged the National Housing Authority (NHA) anew to let them have thousands of housing units left unoccupied, warning they would mobilize the country’s homeless and proceed to take the houses for themselves.
A 24 Oras report by Ian Cruz showed the urban poor group’s protest in Pandi, Bulacan to show they will not backing down until their demands are met.
“Kukuhanin namin ang lahat ng mga walang tirahan, kukuhanin namin ang mga tiwangwang sa buong Pilipinas,” Kadamay’s Pandi leader Pat Tupas said.
Last year, members of the group began living in some of the unoccupied units in three Pandi subdivisions.
President Rodrigo Duterte had previously expressed that he wanted to let the Kadamay members keep the units and promised to provide a better housing project for soldiers and policemen.
On May 9, Duterte signed a resolution authorizing the NHA to award unoccupied housing units to other qualified beneficiaries.
Tupas said Kadamay welcomed the Duterte’s latest move.
“Natutuwa kami du’n sa pagpirma kay Digong ng ‘yung resolution number 8. Ito po ‘yung batas na aming isinusulong na aming ipinaglalaban na kung saan batas ng mga maralita,” he said.
A 2016 Commission on Audit report found that 55,329 of 62,472 housing units intended for soldiers and policemen were unoccupied.
A separate report by the NHA showed there were 54,999 of 63,836 housing units completed that had yet to be occupied as of July 2017. —Margaret Claire Layug/JST, GMA News
