Sen. Joel Villanueva, the son of Jesus is Lord Church founder Bro. Eddie Villanueva, said it was “unfortunate that the President said those words that I totally don’t agree with.”

“All my life I was taught to never put God’s name in vain as Exodus 20:7 says, 'You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain,'” he said in a statement.

However, he believed it was not the intention of Duterte to offend the faith community and the people should pray for him.

“He might have been saying that out of some bad experiences in the past or some struggles with doctrines of the church that needs to be clarified to him. At the end of the day, he is the mandated authority given to us and we should pray that he succeeds,” he said.

“And if the President had a bad experience with his faith and religion, we pray that he finds enlightenment,” he added.

Villanueva expressed hope that such statements against God could be avoided.

“The Filipino nation is a God-believing, God-honoring nation as clearly stated in the preamble of our constitution. At any rate, I continue to pray for the President as well as for the nation, that God’s love, grace, favor, and especially mercy be upon us all,” he said.
