President Rodrigo Duterte and his family should be the first ones to undergo drug tests, opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said Monday.

Trillanes made the remark after a surprise random drug testing of employees at the Senate on Monday morning.

"It's in the interest ng ating mga kababayan na malaman na ang public servants nila ay hindi durugista, hindi influenced ng illegal drugs," he said.

(It's in the interest of our countrymen to know that their public servants are not drug users or under the influence of illegal drugs.)

The senator said the President and his family should voluntarily submit themselves to a drug test.

"Ang sa akin dito, ang panawagan ko dapat ang Office of the President ang una. Dapat si Duterte mismo para malaman ng taumbayan na 'yung mismong namumuno ng war on drugs ay hindi impluwensyado ng droga," Trillanes said.

(I call on the Office of the President to go first. Duterte should be the first one so that the public can be assured that the leader of the war on drugs is not under the influence of illegal drugs.)

"Dapat magkusa sila kasi maraming pinapatay ang tatay nila kaya kailangan beyond reproach ang first family," he added.

(They should volunteer themselves because their father ordered the killing of many people so the first family should be beyond reproach.)

During his third State of the Nation Address last week, the President said the government's anti-narcotics drive will be as "relentless" and "chilling" as the day it started 2 years ago.

"The war against illegal drugs will not be sidelined. Instead, it will be as relentless as chilling, if you will, as the day it began," Duterte said.
